How to deal with Stretch Marks

👼 Dealing with Postpartum Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a common concern, and while they often occur post partum, stretch marks can also arising during adolescence or due to rapid body /weight changes. It's important to consider that stretch marks are NORMAL, but if they bother you, there are some treatment options- see below.

Expectation Management: Set realistic expectations: while we aim for improved appearance, complete skin restoration isn't possible. However, my multimodal approach is showing promising results.

Prevention: Research suggests moisturising the skin might be able to prevent stretch marks. Silicone gel can be used to prevent striae (stretch marks) related to pregnancy- used daily from 26 weeks the study showed 30% reduction in stretch marks.

Treatment: Treat early when stretch marks are red as the skin is more responsive to treatment. White marks are harder to treat.

  • Moisturiser: apply daily. Extra additives show limited evidence. There is no miracle cream so don't go nuts

  • Silicone Gel: biopsy studies show increased collagen and reduction in pigmentation. About 50% of patients saw improvement (not resolution). You can purchase online or at the clinic (e.g. "Stratamark" available in our clinic.

  • Retinoids: Prescription-grade "Retrieve" (needs a script e.g. from your GP). Avoid if pregnant. Apply at night, wash in AM. You must combine with SPF and moisturiser due to increased sun sensitivity. May not be suitable for very thin/sensitive skin- discuss with your doctor.

These devices boost the healing response, increase collagen and reduce vascularity. Begin early for best results - when marks are red.

a) Skin Pen microneedling

b) Vascular Lasers/IPL: good for reducing redness

c) Ablative lasers : Ultraclear

My clinic protocols combine 3 sessions of Ultraclear and vascular laser, adn can be used on any skin type including darker skin.
