Vaginal Rejuvenation Laser

The natural ageing process and childbirth cause changes that reduce general wellbeing, pelvic floor function and sexual satisfaction. Dr Grant has a special interest in women's health and laser medicine and is one of only a handful of GPs in Australia trained in vaginal rejuvenation laser therapy.

Vaginal rejuvenation is a non surgical (no surgery or incision), heat based therapy that offers women relief from symptoms such vaginal dryness and itch, urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse and vaginal ballooning. Laser therapy can effectively increase pelvic floor tone and induce vaginal tightening, improve lubrication and help to restore bladder and bowel function. Laser therapy won't reverse major prolapse but it can assist women to return to a healthy exercise programme, reduce incontinence and restore sexual function.

Dr Grant is currently offering this service as part of a multidisciplinary clinic in conjunction with a Urologist and Gynaecologist.  If you would like to discuss this treatment, please book an appointment with Dr Grant at Bulli Medical Practice. Treatments and multidisciplinary input occur at South Coast Women's Health Institute, an all female staffed  clinic on site at South Coast Urology. You will not need a referral for these procedures.

Special considerations

  • Not suitable if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not suitable for women with large prolapse - the treatment however does have evidence to suggest improvement in mild to moderate prolapse
  • Suitable for women who have had oestrogen dependent cancers

Procedure time

Initial assessment 30- 40 minutes. Most women are referred to a pelvic floor physiotherapist. The vaginal rejuvenation treatment takes 30 minutes. Please attend 15 minutes early so local anaesthetic can be applied.

Recommended plan

For stress incontinence and vaginal dryness : 3 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart. Maintenance treatment annually.

Prolapse and vaginal laxity/tightening treatments may require 4-6 treatments,

Downtime / aftercare

The procedure is relatively quick and painless. Many women experience an increase in vaginal discharge which may be clear or occasionally blood stained. This is normal and will settle in a few days.

Avoid sexual intercourse, swimming and intense exercise for 1 week after your treatment.

The initial consultation is as per normal GP fees and will attract a medicare rebate. The cost of a package of 3 laser  sessions is approximately $2500 and is not covered by medicare.
