Skin Needling (Dermapen)

Skin needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenation procedure that stimulates collagen and elastin and enhances the clarity and texture of skin.

It is a safe, inexpensive and useful for a myriad of skin conditions including the delicate areas around the eye, lip and décolletage. It is also ideal for clients with darker skin types as there is a low risk of scarring. The other benefits of microneedling are practical - it has limited downtime and can be done at any time of the year.

 Skin needling is indicated for:

  • reducing fine lines and wrinkles

  • improving congestion oiliness and large pores

  • improving acne scars and stretch marks

  • improving pigment disorders

  • stimulating hair growth, in conjunction with other treatments

  • a preventative treatment to maintain youthful skin

We also use skin needling as a primer before skin treatments, especially platelet rich plasma (PRP), as the process of microneedling enhances absorption of topical products by up to 80%.

At Thrive Skin Clinic we only offer you the best medical grade microneedling device, the Dermapen 3, which is approved by the TGA and can penetrate deeper into the skin than standard devices. As a medical clinic we are able to use topical anaesthetic and use deeper levels which stimulates collagen and can provide more significant rejuvenation.

We advise clients to apply a topical anaesthetic to the treatment are 45 minutes before treatment.  We compound our own topical local anaesthetic (TLA) which you can purchase for a nominal fee from the clinic. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, most TLAs are contraindicated. You will still be able to have a treatment but we will use a lower setting.

We recommend a course of 4-6 treatments done every 4-6 weeks. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 6-12 months.

Downtime / Aftercare
Your skin will be red and feel sunburnt fora few days. You may experience mild swelling , especially around the eye area. Use a bland moisturiser until skin settles and avoid active treatments such as Vitamin A on the skin until the skin has settled.

Special Considerations

  • Works well in combination with IPL, peels and dermal fillers.

  • We advise at least 2 weeks of prescribed skin care before and after your treatment to enhance efficacy & recovery

  • If you have had a cold sore in the treatment area you need to take antiviral medication before and after your treatment. Talk to us about this before your appointment

  • A daily home treatment with active ingredients and sun cream is encouraged to maintain healthy, beautiful skin

  • Can be done on occasion if pregnant or breastfeeding, but without topical  local anaesthetic.
